President Paul Biya has not yet declared his candidacy for the 2025 presidential but some opinion leaders are already reading the writing on the wall. One of those who has no doubt that the Cameroonian leader would extend his 42-year mandate on pain of creating a void is Prof. Mathias Eric Owona Nguini.
According to the academic, Paul Biya’s withdrawal will create a void, and those who want his departure will realize there is a void. “He is almost obliged to go,” concluded Mathias Eric Owona Nguini, in answer to a question about whether President Paul Biya intends to run for another term in 2025.
Owona Nguini indicates that as the hard drive of the Cameroonian governing system, Biya would want to stay on so long as there is no real threat to his power.
“Do you think President Paul Biya wouldn’t want to run again? It’s very unlikely due to his own trajectory (…) You are dealing with a rather unique character who, as I say, the expression was borrowed by someone who made it the title of a book, is the hard drive of the Cameroonian governing system. A personified hard drive, meaning in terms of trajectory within the institutional system, he is one of the oldest, or at a very high level, he is the oldest,” declared Mathias Eric Owona Nguini on the set of the show “C’politik” on CRTV.
Mathias Eric Owona Nguini who sees Biya as a professional politician wonders how he would adjust if he returned to the village.
“Do you see President Biya going to the fields early in the morning or being in the village? It’s very difficult because he wouldn’t be used to it. He might go to the fields during his moments of rest or vacation, but he is a professional in political administration and then in party politics,” emphasized Mathias Eric Owona Nguini.
