Georges Wega will soon leave Société Générale. He announced the news internally on July 26. The 54-year-old Cameroonian held the position of Deputy Director of International Banking Networks for the Africa, Mediterranean Basin, and Overseas region (Afmo) at this French bank. He will leave the company at the end of this August.
“This resignation, announced internally on July 26, 2024, causes a redistribution of control over this perimeter. Afmo head François Bloch will take over the supervision of the Senegalese and Ivorian subsidiaries, while those of Cameroon and Madagascar, which has just fallen into the fold of Bred Banque Populaire, will come under the control of Philippe Amestoy, Deputy Director like Georges Wega”, can be read in an article on JeuneAfrique.
Georges Wega will also leave the board of directors of the ten Société Générale subsidiaries, where he held a position as a director. He joined Société Générale in 2014 as one of the Deputy Managing Directors of the Cameroonian subsidiary. Within this company, he contributed to the growth of these regional subsidiaries. “The return on equity of Sub-Saharan Africa was 19.3% in 2023, while that of the entire continent was capped at 14.6%. During his tenure, Georges Wega also worked on the Africanization of the various management teams of Société Générale’s subsidiaries in Africa. The group now has 13 leaders from the continent”, continues JeuneAfrique.
The Cameroonian is the first African head of Société Générale in Senegal. A first for the bank, which decided to promote an African to head its Senegalese subsidiary. “In July 2018, he supervised the activities of the eight subsidiaries in West Africa. Georges Wega has worked for the financial branch of General Electric in Brussels and Amsterdam; and for Barclays Bank in London. He was the Managing Director of UBA’s Cameroonian subsidiary for four years”, notes L’Economie quotidien.
