Barrister Amungwa Tanyi, intrepid human rights lawyer, is determined to see an end to impunity in Cameroon where some high-ranking officials are using influence peddling to cover alleged acts of terrorism they are suspected of committing.
Barrister Amungwa of the NdeNtso and Associates L.P.,Mile 17 Buea, summoned a press conference in Yaounde last Saturday to announce that he had written to the President of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, calling for the lifting of the immunity of Hon Ngala Gerard so that he could face trial together with Nkambe Mayor, Musa Shey Nfor, for alleged acts of terrorism, financing of acts terrorism, laundering of proceeds of terrorism, recruitment and training, acclamation of acts of terrorism, war business, armed band, trans-border armed trafficking, and other war crimes.
Admitting that they were still allegations, the human right lawyer claimed the activities of the duo “are exacerbating and compromising the security of the
population, especially those of law enforcement officers and vulnerable youths.”
He said Hon. Ngala and the Nkambe mayor have been under investigation since the 11th February 2024 youth day bomb blast in Nkambe , Donga Mantung that left a student dead and several persons seriously injured and hospitalized in the Bamenda General hospital.
Barrister Amungwa claimed denouncers of the duo were behind bars but the North West Judiciary were silent about the serious allegations brought against them.
He warned should investigations not begin of the allegations, the duo would use their influence within the corridors in Yaounde to propagate a narrative different from the real evidence on the ground.
According to Barrister Amungwa, “Following the tragic bomb blast at the ceremonial ground of the Youth Day in Nkambe, capital of Donga and Mantung Division, on February 11, 2024, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of several primary school pupils, accusations arose that Honourable Ngala and Mayor Musa Shey peddled their influence to the extent that they colluded with certain administrative and judicial authorities of that division and beyond to enable the release of prime suspects, who then fled into neighboring Nigeria.”
The denunciation addressed to the President of the National Assembly is copied The President of The Republic, The President of The Senate, The Prime Minister, Head Government The Minister of State, Minister of Justice And Keeper of The Seals, The Minister Delegate at The Presidency of The Republic In Charge of Defense, Minister of Territorial Administration, Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development, Secretary of State In The Ministry of Defense in Charge of The National Gendarmerie, Delegate General for National Security and The President of The Cameroon Bar Association.
Quizzed on whether his action was not politically motivated, the human rights lawyer clarified:
“Our mission is not to indict anybody, Our mission is that of denouncing certain actors who appear to be playing some games in the field, but after playing those games, they are aware of it but they choose to take different directions in order to give another narrative”.
He said they had been investigating the allegations since 11 February bomb blast and as a chambers take responsibility “to denounce and decry the fact that some stakeholders in one way or the other may be using the war in the North west and South west regions to enrich themselves, to promote impunity, to try to give another narration about the population that we think they are protecting”.
The human rights lawyer said the authorities in Bamenda like the State prosecutor are quite aware of the allegations but their delay may help Hon. Ngala to come up with another narrative.
He said their intention is to ensure that a robust investigation is open so that they should clear their names and the institutions they incarnate”.
The human rights lawyers used the opportunity to call of the US ambassador, the British and Canadian High Commissioners as well as the Swiss and European Union ambassadors in Cameroon to take what he was saying with a lot of attention because the peace in the Anglophone regions is greatly threatened by individuals acting with impunity.
Barrister Amungwa is also credited with having blown the cover on the dangerous activities of Moja Moja in the South West and today the one who thought he had the protection of regime barons is today being investigated.
