The severe floods in the Far North Region that have left several persons dead and hundreds of people homeless have forced government to act.
Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, has expressed his solidarity with the populations of the Far North affected by severe flooding. In a message posted on his X account (formerly Twitter), he extended his condolences to the victims and assured the government’s commitment in the face of this natural disaster.
The Mayo-Danay and Logone-et-Chari Divisions are particularly affected by these floods, caused by climate change. The toll is heavy: loss of human lives, destruction of fields and homes. This situation raises concerns about food security and the health of local populations.
In his statement, Joseph Dion Ngute declared: “It is with deep emotion that I learned of the trials faced by our populations in the Far North Region […] I am particularly distressed by the loss of human lives caused by this unleashing of the forces of nature, as well as by the significant damage of all kinds.”
The head of government praised the courage of the populations in the face of this adversity and reaffirmed the state’s commitment:
“In saluting the courage you have shown in these difficult times, I hereby express the firm commitment of the Government, which cannot remain passive in the face of this tragedy […]”
Despite the efforts made by the authorities, the situation remains critical. The floods have reached an unprecedented level, endangering the lives and livelihoods of many inhabitants of the region.
This disaster once again underscores the urgency of adopting effective measures to combat the effects of climate change and improve the management of natural risks in vulnerable areas of Cameroon.
