Regarding the date of the presidential election, while the exact day is uncertain, the period is known to all, and the relevant dates are easy to identify. It should be noted that the presidential election is constitutionally not subject to anticipation or extension. Therefore, it will inevitably take place in 2025.
The indication of the electoral period is given by the provisions of Article 6(3) of the Constitution: “The election takes place at least twenty (20) days and at most fifty (50) days before the expiration of the powers of the incumbent President of the Republic.” The incumbent President took the oath on November 6, 2018. His term therefore expires on November 6, 2025. This means that the presidential election in Cameroon will take place between Thursday, September 18, 2025, and Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Since the electoral body has been systematically convened on Sundays since the first multiparty election in 1992 and 90 days before the election date, there are potentially (if the Sunday practice is maintained) four Sundays in the indicated period: September 21 with the convening of the electoral body on June 24, September 28 with the convening of the electoral body on July 1, October 5 with the convening of the electoral body on July 8, and October 12 with the convening of the electoral body on July 15, 2025.
GOOD TO KNOW.
The convening of the electoral body (i.e., the publication of the presidential decree setting the election date) immediately stops the registration on the electoral lists. Therefore, in 2025, the end of registrations will not be the usual August 31, but the day of the convening of the electoral body, which can occur as early as the end of June.
Cameroonians who are not yet registered on the electoral lists must do so no later than June 15.”
