SOBA America has offered scholarships to some students and teachers of St Joseph’s College Sasse. This was during the celebration of the 2024 Edition of SOBAN America Day, on October 13,2024, at the SJC school chapel.
The celebration which commenced with a holy mass was
graced with the presence of His Lordship Michael Bibi, the proprietor of St Joseph’s College Sasse.
Dr. Bertrand Fote, President of SOBA America, was represented by Njukang Asong, Public Relations Officer of SOBA America, during the historic ceremony.
The students and teachers were awarded the scholarships under three main categories : need-based awards, merit-based awards and lottery-based awards. Under the merit category for SOBA America G.C.E, three students were recognized with a scholarship of One Million Fcfa each Advanced and Ordinary Levels.
Njukang Asong noted that the motivation behind these donations is to foster excellence.
“For those who score a perfect score of 11 papers five A , we give them a sponsorship award of a million Fcfa and that is to make sure that we want excellence. If we have ten students five A we are going to give out ten million for these students that is what we stand for”, he expatiated.
The celebration equally witnessed the donation of about nine laptops to St Joseph’s College Sasse by SOBA DMV (Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia). The laptops were handed over to the school principal by the Public Relations Officer of SOBA America on behalf of SOBA DMV. The DMV project was commenced byDr. Julius Ngwa, the former president of DMV and completed by Chief Luma Becke, current president.
Njukang Asong noted that he laptops donated are to encourage students to get involved in information technology.
“The idea is to make sure that students can go into information technology. Students have access to knowledge, access the world wide web, and study with these laptops. So these laptops from SOBA DMV are here for the students and teachers to foster education”, he emphasized.
These initiatives were highly applauded by the chief shepherd of the Diocese of Buea. “I will like to thank SOBA America for making this day in which they came with the other SOBANS to encourage the teachers and the students as their studies and teaching here is concerned. We have just witnessed a good number of students and some members of staff been given some scholarship which will go a long way to help and assist the students especially as far as their educational career is concerned”, Bishop Bibi said.
While applauding the initiative, Bishop Michael Bibi encouraged SOBA America not to relent in their efforts. He equally expressed words of gratitude to SOBA DMW, for the laptops donated to the school which aim at enhancing the teaching and learning process.
“My prayer and wish is that this donation will help to improve the learning process as far as Sasse College is concerned” , he said.
SOBA America Day is commemorated every second week of October. It is a day set aside by the ex-students of St Joseph College Sasse to encourage students and teachers of their Alma Mater through scholarships amongst others.
