President Paul Biya has authorized Alamine Ousmane Mey, the Minister of Economy, Planning, and Regional Development to finalize a financial agreement with the Eksport Finance Bank of Norway to modernize the Japoma Biya water supply station.
The authorization contained in decree No. 2024/402 of October 17 is part of the government’s policy to improve the country’s water infrastructure.
The rehabilitation and extension of the Japoma drinking water supply station represent a major challenge for the Douala agglomeration, which faces growing challenges in water supply. This metropolis of over 3 million inhabitants is experiencing constant demographic expansion, putting pressure on existing infrastructure.
Norwegian financing
The choice of the Eksport Finance Bank of Norway as a financial partner demonstrates Cameroon’s attractiveness to international investors in the infrastructure sector. This loan of 74.8 million euros will allow for the modernization of aging facilities and the expansion of the distribution network.
Perspectives
The modernization of the Japoma station is part of a broader program to renovate the country’s water infrastructure. It should significantly contribute to improving the living conditions of the populations of Douala and its surroundings.
The signing of the agreement is expected in the coming weeks, paving the way for the effective start of the work. This project represents a significant advance in the policy of universal access to drinking water pursued by the Cameroonian authorities.
