United States-based education promoter and civil society actor, Fabian Ekukwe Lyonga, has elected to facilitate for free access to education of primary school children of employees of the Cameroon Development Corporation, CDC. Their parents are claiming months of unpaid wages.
Fabian Lyonga, who is founder and President of the Lyonga Institute of Science and Technology, LIST Tiko, announced the good news in a statement issued November 29, 2024.
The development, which comes as a relief to the disgruntled CDC workers who have been protesting months of unpaid wages, takes effect from the ongoing academic year, according to the donor.
The children will study for free at the LIST Academy, located in Tiko, the donor said.
Fabian Lyonga has disclosed that besides the free access to the school, the children will also be offered essential learning materials to ease their stay on the campus.
In his statement announcing the offer, Fabian Lyonga wrote: “In recognition of the immense sacrifices and contributions made by employees of the Cameroon Development Corporation, CDC, to the socio-economic development of our Region and nation, I, Fabian E. Lyonga, a young elite of the community and President of Lyonga Institute of Science and Technology, LIST, am deeply moved by the challenges faced by many families due to unpaid wages”.
He added that: “It is my firm belief that every child has the right to education, regardless of their family’s financial situation. Education is a cornerstone for a brighter future and no child should be deprived of this fundamental right due to circumstances beyond their control”.
He then announced that: “Starting from this academic year, all children of unpaid employees of the CDC, who are of basic education age, are granted free education at the LIST Academy in Tiko”.
Lyonga revealed that: “…the programme will cover tuition fees for the current academic year and counting. Additional resources such as textbooks and uniforms will be provided where possible”.
“Parents/guardians are required to submit proof of their employment status with the CDC, along with documentation of unpaid wages. Applications can be submitted at the LIST Academy’s administrative office in Tiko, along the Tiko-Douala Road,” he continued.
Lyonga has said the initiative reaffirms his institution’s shared responsibility to uplift the community, support families in need, and invest in the leaders of tomorrow.
“It is my hope that this act of solidarity inspires other institutions and individuals to contribute meaningfully to our community’s welfare. Together, we can ensure that no child is left behind,” he also said.
