Clashes between the Massa and Mossoy communities in the Far North region of Cameroon have resulted in 3 deaths and several injuries according to authorities, with the local population suggesting the toll could be higher.
The flare-up, triggered by incidents of cattle theft, has instilled fear among the villagers, constraining the Far North Governor, to order the deployment of forces.
“We have deployed law enforcement forces and initiated investigations to find the culprits so they can be brought to justice,” stated the governor of the Far North region, Midjiyawa Bakary.
He also urged the communities to reconcile in line with the president’s directive: “You must learn to live together; the president’s policy is to promote coexistence, and each of us should adhere to this policy for a more prosperous Cameroon,” he concluded.
The local population hopes that the visit from regional authorities will help restore peace and bring back a healthy society.
“We are terrified, even the sound of a mouse scares us, we immediately think it’s the Massa coming. This needs to stop,” explained a villager.
