Me Alice Nkom, lawyer and president of the Network of Human Rights Defenders in Central Africa (Redhac), has been summoned for the third time by the prefect of Wouri. After the cancellation of her previous meeting, a summons for November 19 was served to Me Alice Nkom by a bailiff.
However, Me Nkom has strong support, notably from the novelist Calixthe Beyala: ” Alice Nkom? The whole of Africa does not have another woman of her caliber. Cameroon should be proud to have a woman of such stature, such great intelligence, such extraordinary humanism! We all must protect her beyond our political opinions! We all must shout: long live Alice Nkom, long live Cameroon. I remember this great lady, crossing oceans to come and protest with me against the discrimination faced by minorities, protests initiated by my association, the Collectif Égalité. Who else could have shown such solidarity, friendship, and fraternity? Alice, we love you! Calixthe Beyala” writes Beyala.
Let us recall that Me Alice Nkom has been at odds with the authorities since the Minister of Territorial Administration ordered the closure of Redhac. The competent territorial administrative authority then sealed the premises with the reasons being “Illicit and exorbitant funding” , “activities likely to undermine the integrity of the national financial system”, and “lack of justification for the destination of received funds”.
Not ready to give up, Me Alice Nkom broke the seals imposed on the doors of her organization’s headquarters on Monday, December 9, 2024, in Bali, in the 1st district of Douala. Hence her summons by the prefect of Wouri.
