(Business in Cameroon) – Cameroon Railways Company (Camrail), the country’s sole railway operator, announced in a recent statement that it invests nearly CFA 12 billion every year in rail transport. The company also revealed that it pays around CFA 10 billion annually in taxes to the state.

These figures were shared during the Yaoundé Economic Meetings, held on February 26-27, 2025, and organized by the Cameroon Employers’ Association (GECAM).

Speaking at the event, Alain Minoué, Camrail’s Commercial and Marketing Director, highlighted the company’s key contributions: “Beyond our mobility solutions, we help streamline port operations, enhance corridor competitiveness, and stabilize fuel prices. The railway also plays a crucial role in exporting large volumes of goods, including raw and processed timber, cotton fiber, sesame, and gum arabic—many of which come from Chad and the Central African Republic. These exports generate significant foreign exchange earnings.”

Camrail took over Cameroon’s railway operations in 1999 after the privatization of the former state-run company, Regifercam. Initially a subsidiary of the French Bolloré Group, then Africa Global Logistics (AGL), Camrail now manages the country’s 918-kilometer railway network, handling both passenger and freight transport.

Mama Nsounchiat Fit, Deputy Managing Director of AGL Cameroon, emphasized the importance of the event: “Our participation in the Yaoundé Economic Meetings was a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue with stakeholders and reaffirm our commitment to modern, efficient, and sustainable logistics. AGL Cameroon remains dedicated to supporting infrastructure and strategic services that drive the country’s growth.”

AGL outlined its three main strategic priorities in Cameroon. First, improving trade flow efficiency by offering tailored logistics solutions for the local and regional markets. Second, accelerating the digitalization of logistics services to boost operational efficiency and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses. Lastly, developing sustainable and eco-friendly logistics solutions aligned with Cameroon’s environmental goals.
