The Cameroon government’s swift reaction to the attack on Mounouna Foutsou and Ambassador Abee Evina has been cited by Steve Fah as a case “double standard in justice”.
In a recently published opinion piece, Steve Fah revisits the assault he suffered on March 23, 2022, in Belgium by activists of the Brigade Anti-Sardinards (BAS). These individuals, claiming to be MRC supporters, justified their attack by Fah’s open support for Cameroonian state institutions. However, no official reaction from the Cameroonian government followed this assault. “I felt this indifference as a real injustice,” he confides, regretting that this violence was ignored.
It was only recently, after a new assault in Brussels against a Cameroonian minister and the Cameroonian ambassador to Belgium, that the authorities reacted. “This time, the government reacted immediately and publicly,” Fah notes, highlighting the contrast with the lack of response during his own incident. He denounces a “double standard in justice” and questions why it took an attack on a high-ranking official for measures to be taken.
The most concerning point for Steve Fah is the media’s tendency to blame Maurice Kamto, the MRC leader, for these acts of violence. “Attributing these acts to a single individual risks fueling a new tribal problem in Cameroon,” he warns. He insists that it is not just a matter of leadership but also a dangerous ideology promoted by BAS activists and, according to him, by some MRC supporters on social media.
However, he believes that Maurice Kamto bears a moral responsibility as the head of the MRC. “A true leader knows how to control his followers,” he states, while emphasizing that Kamto has not, in his view, distanced himself from the perpetrators of violence, especially after the assault he suffered. “This silence is regrettable, as a man of peace should never tolerate such a situation,” he adds.
For Steve Fah, the solution lies not only in condemning individuals but in eradicating an ideology of political violence. He concludes firmly: “Cameroon cannot be led by a party whose supporters have such a culture of violence.”
Fah remains clear on his political stance: “I say it again and again: Anything but the MRC at the head of Cameroon! For a stable, united, and peaceful Cameroon, I will vote RDPC! That is my choice, and you must respect it.”
