YAOUNDE, Cameroon – The United States is intensifying its crackdown on illegal immigration, with a strong warning issued to Cameroonians by the U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Christopher J. Lamora.
In a hard-hitting statement titled “Don’t Risk Your Future,” the Ambassador cautioned against the dangers and severe consequences of attempting to enter or remain in the United States unlawfully.
Thousands of Cameroonians legally travel to the U.S. each year for studies, tourism, work, or family visits. However, Ambassador Lamora warns that seeking to immigrate illegally – whether through false visa applications, overstaying permitted time, or crossing borders unlawfully – can lead to serious and life-altering penalties.
“If you try to enter the United States illegally, lie to obtain a visa, work without legal authorization, or remain after your visa expires, you will face imprisonment, deportation, and a permanent ban on obtaining a U.S. visa in the future,” the Ambassador emphasized.
According to the statement, the U.S. visa system is among the most secure in the world. Yet, visa fraud remains a growing concern. Some individuals try to game the system through forged documents or false claims. Ambassador Lamora made it clear that such actions constitute visa fraud – a serious offence punishable by law.
“These individuals will not only be prosecuted but will also forfeit their chances of ever entering the United States legally again,” he said.
The Ambassador cited new data to reinforce the tightening enforcement, noting that illegal border crossings into the United States dropped by 94% in February 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, while arrests of undocumented migrants soared sixfold. This, he said, is evidence of the U.S. government’s strengthened resolve to protect its borders.
Beyond legal consequences, Ambassador Lamora warned of the physical dangers associated with illegal migration. Many migrants perish each year while attempting dangerous crossings through deserts or seas. Others fall prey to human traffickers, and criminal gangs, or suffer exploitation and violence.
“Many of those who attempt the journey never reach their destination. Their lives are lost, their futures destroyed,” he stressed.
The Ambassador also highlighted actions being taken against those who facilitate illegal immigration. A recent U.S. policy imposes visa restrictions on foreign officials – including customs and port authorities – who are complicit in or negligent about preventing illegal migration. Transportation and tourism industry personnel who exploit vulnerable travellers are also being targeted.
“Those who profit from endangering lives are not welcome in our country,” Ambassador Lamora said firmly.
The U.S. envoy urged Cameroonians to choose lawful and safe paths when seeking opportunities abroad. “The risks of illegal immigration far outweigh any perceived benefits. Make the right choice – follow the law and protect your future and that of your family,” the statement read.
The message comes amid growing global attention to migration, especially from countries facing economic hardship or conflict. The U.S. government continues to advocate for safe, orderly, and legal migration while discouraging desperate and illegal attempts that put lives in jeopardy.
