An act of unprecedented barbarity has again bloodied the city of Bamenda. Yufemo Aslem, a geography teacher and owner of a bar, was brutally murdered Sunday night in Bambili, on the outskirts of Bamenda. According to collected testimonies, the teacher was dragged out of his establishment by armed men identified as Ambazonian separatists, then executed in the presence of his wife and children, who were forced to witness this traumatic scene.
This tragedy is part of a series of atrocities that continue to plague the Northwest region, despite repeated attempts to restore peace.
Mr. Aslem, who had previously taught in Nkambe before opening his business in Bambili, has become the latest victim of a conflict that has been dragging on for several years and has already claimed thousands of lives.
This murder testifies to the persistence of violence in this part of the country, where civilian populations are caught between defense forces and non-state armed groups.
“These targeted assassinations aim to instill a climate of terror among the populations and to deter anyone from resuming a normal life in these regions,” explains a security expert who requested anonymity for obvious reasons.
The particular brutality of this murder, carried out in front of the victim’s relatives, marks an escalation in the intimidation methods used by these armed groups.
Local authorities have not yet officially reacted to this murder, but security sources indicate that a search operation for the culprits has been launched in the area.
This tragic event revives concerns about the safety of teachers in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, already weakened by numerous attacks on schools and educational staff.
Yufemo Aslem leaves behind a traumatized family and a community in shock, demanding justice and protection in the face of this surge of senseless violence.
