(Investir au Cameroun) – The Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, has announced the start of compensation payments for 119 people affected by the Bamenda urban crossing rehabilitation project, over a linear distance of 4.3 km. The total amount of compensation is 3.226 billion FCFA. Beneficiaries are invited to present their national identity card and a certificate of bank account opening to receive their compensation, in accordance with the list displayed on the websites of the ministry and the World Bank.
The sections concerned by these compensations are: Finance Junction-Veterinary Junction-City Chemist (2.07 km) and Hospital Round about-Meta quarter-T Junction-Ayaba Street-Veterinary Junction (2.3 km). People located on the sections Amour Mezam-Finance Junction (1.07 km) and City Chemist-Food Market-Hospital Round about (1.05 km) will not have their properties affected by the current works.
A complaints management mechanism, provided by the NGO CIPCRE, has been put in place to guarantee the transparency and fairness of the process. This operation is part of the rehabilitation of the 6.5 km of the urban crossing of Bamenda, financed by an additional contribution of 30 billion FCFA from the World Bank in June 2024.
This project constitutes the final link in the major Babadjou-Bamenda road (52 km), essential for connecting the West and North-West regions and boosting trade between Cameroon and Nigeria via the Yaoundé-Bamenda-Enugu corridor (438 km). The rehabilitation of this road, delayed by insecurity in the English-speaking regions, is expected to improve mobility, cross-border trade and regional economic integration.
